Manchester Airport is situated 8 miles south of the city but it has very good transport links:

  • Metrolink: The Metrolink tram stop can be found by Manchester Victoria Train Station and the trams run to the airport every 12 minutes during the day. The journey time shouldn’t be more than an hour, and it costs £4.40 for a single ticket.
  • Train: Both the TransPennine Express and Northern Rail train companies run to the airport from Manchester Piccadilly Train Station in the centre. The journey time is quite short at just 20 minutes, and should cost about £3.70 for a single.
  • Bus: As well as local and regional buses, the easiest way to travel to the airport is by catching the number 43 Stagecoach bus from the city centre. It runs throughout the day and night taking about an hour to reach the airport, although it is wise to leave a little extra time in case the traffic is particularly bad. The ticket costs £3.50.
  • Taxi: Taxis will take about 20 minutes to get to the airport from the city and can cost anything upwards of £35 depending on the size of car.

Useful information about Tegel Airport

Tegel is the main international airport in Berlin and is 5 miles northwest of the city. There is no direct rail connection, but it is easily accessible by both bus and car:

  • Bus: BVG have many buses stopping at the airport that can take you to connections on both the U-Bahn and S-Bahn as well as into the centre of Berlin. You can catch the TXL or X9 Express buses, or the 109 or 128 local buses as they all travel in to Alexanderplatz in the city. The journey takes about 30 minutes depending on traffic and costs 2.80 euros.
  • Taxi: Taxis can be hired from the taxi rank in the inner ring of terminal A and outside terminals C and E. Trips into the city centre take about 25 minutes at a cost of about 30 euros.

Useful information about Schönefeld Airport

This is smaller than Tegel and is 11 miles to the south of Berlin:

  • Train: To get into the centre of Berlin, take a Regional-Express (RE) or Regional-Bahn (RB) train from the main train station at the airport, Berlin-Schönefeld Flughafen Station. These leave every 30 minutes and take 20 minutes into the city centre. The cost is 3.40 euros.
  • Bus: BVG buses 171 and 162 will take you into Berlin also at a cost of 3.40 euros, and the journey should take about 45 minutes.
  • Taxi: Taxis can be found at the taxi rank outside the terminals and costs about 48 euros for the 45 minute journey.
