Flying with United Airlines

United Airlines or simply “United”, is the world's largest airline in terms of number of destinations served. Based in Chicago, USA, United Airlines was founded in 1926 and today operates a comprehensive domestic and international network of over 350 worldwide destinations with a fleet of over 700 aircraft. United Airlines flies to 235 domestic mainline destinations and 138 international destinations in 60 countries across Asia, Americas, Europe, Oceania and Africa. United Airlines operates out of 9 major domestic hubs located in Houston, Chicago, New York, Denver, San Francisco, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles, whilst Guam and Tokyo are used as international bases. Since 1997 United Airlines has been a member of the exclusive Star Alliance and has codeshare agreements with a number of major airlines worldwide which enable passengers a wider range of connecting destinations.

Online check-in

  • Online check-in for flights operated by United Airlines is available starting 24 hours before the scheduled departure. The point at which check-in closes is dependent on the flight’s destinations, though generally the time stands at 45-60 minutes for passengers without checked baggage and 90-120 minutes for those travelling with checked baggage.
  • Online check-in for United Airlines flights is available for passengers whose first flight on their itinerary is operated by United Airlines, whose itinerary involves 4 destinations or less and those who are travelling with fewer than 9 other passengers.
  • Airport check-in kiosks and check-in desks are also available for no additional charge. It is also possible for passengers to check in online and print their boarding pass at an airport check-in kiosk.
  • Once you have checked in you will be unable to make any adjustments to your booking.

Cabin luggage allowance

  • All cabin baggage on United Airlines flights must be no bigger than 114cm (22cm x 35cm x 56cm) including handles and wheels and must be able to fit comfortably into overhead lockers on board the aircraft.
  • There is no maximum weight restriction on hand luggage for passengers of United Airlines.
  • Passengers are allowed 1 item of cabin luggage per ticket. In addition to the free cabin baggage allowance, passengers are also allowed a personal item, such as laptop bag or handbag, provided they are no larger than 22cm x 25cm x 43cm.
  • Any item larger than the cabin luggage size and any item above the cabin luggage and personal item allowance will be checked to your final destination. Checked baggage service charges may apply.

Checked baggage allowance

  • Checked luggage for domestic and international flights operated by United Airlines cannot be greater than 158cm in size for all flights.
  • The weight limit for all checked luggage for domestic and international flights is 23kg, though this can be increased, for a fee, to a maximum of 32kg for each individual item.
  • Most passengers are allowed checked baggage not exceeding 23kg pounds. All other passengers traveling within the USA and between the USA and Canada, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands with checked baggage weighing more than 23kg and not exceeding 32kg will be charged for each item of baggage. Bags exceeding 32kg but less than 45kg will be charged the maximum excess baggage fee.
  • Some checked items such as surfboards and bicycles will be charged a fixed handling fee because of size, fragility, or other handling requirements, whilst others may be checked in lieu of checked baggage provided they meet the weight and size restrictions as defined by the airline.

I had expected to be able to take my carry-on luggage into the cabin but I was disappointed to find that it had to be checked into the hold because the overhead space was small on the type of aircraft used for the flight. If this information had been provided at the time of booking or even check-in I may well have used a smaller carry-on bag.

Worst airline I have ever used. Stewards not friendly and I had to pay 30 dollars each way for my luggage which when I booked the flight was not included. Will never fly on this flight ever again.
