Berlin Facts

Berlin is the capital of Germany, as well as the symbol of division between the country during the Cold War. However, with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Berlin became the symbol of reunification. Today, Berlin is a city which boasts new buildings and historic palaces. It is one of the most politically influential cities in the European Union, home to Museum Island and host to the famous Berlin International Film Festival, "Berlinale".

Berlin Airports

Currently, flights to Berlin are spread across the various airports of the capital. There are 2 airports that serve the city: Berlin Tegel and Berlin Schonefeld. Currently there is a third airport under construction, Berlin Brandenburg, which when finished will become the city's only airport.

Berlin Schonefeld

The Berlin Schonefeld Airport, airport code SXF, is the smallest of Berlin's two airports, serving many low cost airlines. It is located 11 miles outside of Berlin city centre. To reach Berlin there is the railway station, "Berlin Schönefeld Flughafen", a short walk away from the airport, with train services on Berlin S-Bahn lines S9 and S45 every 20 minutes and the RE AirportExpress train every 30 minutes.

Berlin Tegel

In terms of passenger traffic, Berlin Tegel (TXL), is the city's largest. It is 5 miles outside of Berlin centre, connected to U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations by several BVG bus lines: JetExpress TXL, X9 Express bus, #109 bus, #128 bus.

Berlin Brandenburg

In 2014 (estimated) the new airport, Berlin Brandenburg (BER) is scheduled to be opened. The airport will be located in the municipality of Schonefeld, just outside of Berlin. Berlin Brandenburg will have a capacity of 27 million passengers per year and will replace Berlin Schonefeld and Tegel airports.
