  • Train: At £3.70, the 20-minute train journey to Manchester Airport is excellent value. You can catch a TransPennine Express or Northern Rail train from Manchester Piccadilly to the airport, and they run almost 24 hours a day with a short break between 1 am and 4 am.
  • Bus: There are many local buses that serve the airport as well as regional services and a 24-hour Stagecoach bus route. The 24-hour bus leaves the bus station at Manchester Piccadilly as often as every 10 minutes during the day. It costs £3.50 and takes about an hour.
  • Taxi: There are many taxi firms serving the airport as it takes just 20 minutes from the centre of Manchester. Costs vary but range from about £35 for a car that fits four passengers.

The largest of Rome’s two airports, Fiumicino lies 21 miles outside the city. Here are suggestions of how to get into Rome itself:

  • Train: Trenitalia’s rail service runs the Leonardo Express just for airline passengers into Rome’s central Termini railway station. The journey takes about half an hour and costs 8 euros. Regional RL1 trains are also available but the fare will depend upon your final destination.
  • Bus: Cotral, T.A.M. srl, SIT bus shuttle, Terravision and Atral-Schiaffini all run buses into central Rome from stops outside terminals 2 and 3. The journey will vary depending on the traffic but should take about an hour, and the fares range from 4 euros to 8 euros.
  • Taxi: Taxis will be slightly quicker with a journey time of around 45 minutes, and one of the licensed white taxis will cost aroung 48 euros into the city centre.
