It is a large airport and the busiest in the UK outside London, so there are the usual array of bars, shops, restaurants and nearby hotels. You can get to it by using many different modes of transport:

  • Metrolink: The tram stops right inside the airport and moving walkways transport you to the terminals. The average journey time from Victoria Tram Stop in the centre of Manchester takes about an hour, and they leave every 12 minutes between 6am and 11pm at a cost of £4.40.
  • Train: TransPennine Express and Northern Rail both have trains that run from Manchester Piccadilly to the airport. They take 20 minutes and cost around £3.70 but can be cheaper if you buy them in advance.
  • Bus: There are regional and local bus departures serving the airport, as well as a 24-hour Stagecoach bus service running from Piccadilly at half-hour intervals overnight to every 10 minutes during the day. The journey time varies depending on the traffic, but the average time taken is about an hour at a cost of £3.50.
  • Taxi: The airport is a 20-minute drive along the M56 and taxis can be picked up anywhere in the centre or pre-ordered. It can cost upwards of £35 for a car with four passengers, but you can also get special deals if you book a return trip at the same time.
