Monarch Airlines, more commonly known as simply Monarch, is a British low-cost airline based at Luton Airport. It features over 30 Airbus and Boeing aircraft that fly daily to 100+ destinations worldwide.
Monarch Airlines online check-in opens 28 days prior to and up to 6 hours before scheduled flight departure. Passengers can pay for checked baggage during online check-in and/or pre-allocate their seat.
Alternatively, the Monarch Airlines airport check-in desks are provided free of charge for passengers carrying hand luggage and/or hold luggage. Those who didn’t pay for a pre-allocated seat during the booking or online check-in process may also check-in for free. They will be allocated a seat at random.
Monarch Airlines airport desks are open 3 hours prior to scheduled flight departure time at the London Luton, London Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham airports. Airport check-in opens 2 hours prior to scheduled flight departure time in overseas airports.
Similarly, airport check-in closes 40 minutes prior to flights (1hr prior to long-haul flights). All passengers arriving after the aforementioned deadline will not be allowed to board.
All checked bags are subject to a fee on Monarch flights. Each passenger can check up to 5 bags weighing a combined total of 20kg. Any hold luggage that exceeds 20kg will incur an excess baggage fee per kilo. Any bags exceeding 32kg will not be accepted.
If you plan on checking a bag, we recommend that you book online as it 50% cheaper than doing so at the airport.
Tip: Passengers travelling together may pool their baggage allowance on the condition that they have paid the relevant checked baggage fees. For example, two passengers may purchase 1 bag and share the 20kg weight allowance between the two of them, etc.

The additional costs should have been more clearly advised. Even though flight was nice, after additional costs of baggage, paying to select seats, on line check in, it would have been cheaper for us with BA.J

The getting on board was far better than has been in the past.. much quicker.. staff could be a little bit more welcoming at passport control though.. staff on the plane were really nice?
With loud, noisey passengers (some just over excited) the air staff should take control in monitoring their loud, continuous behaviour, then dealing with these issues to make sure all other passengers are not affected by such poor experiences. Passengers should not be expected to report matters and therefore inflame a possible volitile/conflict situation. ALL passengers have the right to a quiet, relaxing flight and not be bombarded with constant noise.Dave
The flight was 1 hour late on the out bound journey and 40 minutes late on inbound journey. The accommodation was no good. As the apartment was in the basement of the hotel, and it was very humid and we were provided with very cheap quality stand fans, we did ask to be moved to another apartment or be given some extra fans to keep cool at night, but this was denied. We had to pay extra 30 euros for cleaning the apartment after we left even though I told him that we will be leaving it clean. I wasn't aware of this charges. The shower cubicle was very small and the shower rail was faulty, I did complain but it wasn't fixed. The quilts and the pillows that was provided to us was of very poor quality. I will never use the airline again, the flight was delayed and we was stood there for hours with no explanation! We was then sent to Birmingham with no other choice with a 3 hour coach back to London. The whole trip took nearly 16hours. We was Spoken to rudely and was told to just stand there and wait for hours!Jo

My father was dying last Friday and I changed flight to lunchtime into Luton to be with him, it cost me over £300 to change two one way flights, I made it to my father before he died, but am disgusted at the amount Monarch airlines charged for me to get to my father, I have used the airline for years. Don't expect to have to pay extra for a seat. When i'm given a total for the flight/holiday and it SAYS total price i don't then expect to have to pay extra for a seat !! Where else would i sit?moorsy
Outward flight was subject to a significant delay due to a complete failure of Monarch's computer system, we were over 4 hours late in departing; this with hand written luggage labels etc. But the outward and return flights were exceptionally good with really good service once on the aircrafthalcyon
I last used Monarch about 20 years ago and vowed never to use them again, after I had a case lost from the return flight from America. I used them for this holiday, as I was unable to get a flight with other recognised airlines for the dates I wanted. After I booked the flight, I realised that I would be arriving at my hotel at about midnight, and changed the flight to an early morning one. My original flight cost was £325, with the amendment it went up to £609. My only consolation was that I was gaining, in effect, a further day at the location. However, when I arrived at Birmingham at 0400, there were already queues forming, and it turned out that the Monarch server had gone down, and everything was being done manually. We queued for over two hours before being processed, and we were the lucky ones. We finally took off over 4 hours late, with further complications including when the luggage was miscounted, and had to be offloaded, and a further 15 minutes or so, when a passenger became ill as we were beginning to taxi toward the runway. (fortunately, it was just the heat inside the aircraft that had made them faint). The flight itself was fine. The return flight was delayed by nearly 30 minutes, and our case was ripped beyond repair, (this has now been replaced by Monarch). I will be putting in a claim for flight delay, but notice on their application form that they can arbitrarily reduce compensation by 50% All in all, a dismal experience, each way, and I for one, will never use the airline again.Bob
Chaos is the only way I could describe it, if there was a zero star rating I would give it. Delayed for 4 hours. No other airlines in the airport had computer failures so I can only assume it was negligence on Monarch's part.Sally Biddulph
