Aer Lingus is an Irish airline founded in 1936 and is now owned by IAG (International Airlines Group), of which British Airways and Iberia are also members. It is based in Dublin and has a frequent flyer programme known as AerClub. This uses Avios points and has four levels: Green, Silver, Platinum and Concierge. They operate somewhere between a traditional airline and a low-cost, no frills type of carrier, with meals and beverages only being offered on their long-haul routes.

Aer Lingus flights are part of an interline agreement with jetBlue Airways, Etihad Regional and United Airlines to create smoother connections during multiple flights when this includes different airlines. And it also has a codeshare agreement with many Oneworld, StarAlliance and Skyteam members such as Air Canada and Alaskan Airlines. In 2015 Aer Lingus became the official airline of the Irish Rugby Team and in honour of this they created a special livery for one of their aircraft and named it "Green Spirit".

How do you check-in online with Aer Lingus?

For European flights Aer Lingus check-in opens 30 days before departure and, if you are leaving from the UK, Ireland or Amsterdam, it closes 2 hours before your flight is scheduled to take off. Other airports can vary and for transatlantic flights check-in opens just 24 hours before departure. You can select your seat during the check-in process, but this will incur a fee unless there are fewer than 30 hours before your plane is due to leave. After check-in is completed successfully you can print your boarding pass. When you reach the airport you can simply leave your luggage at the Bag, Tag and Drop desks and proceed to the gate.

What is the checked baggage allowance for Aer Lingus?

The Aer Lingus baggage policy for European flights lets you book your allowance online and comes with four choices. You can select to take either one bag of up to 15 kg, 20 kg, or 25 kg. If you are planning to pack a little more than average, you can opt for up to two bags with an overall weight of 40 kg. Please be advised that any single bag cannot exceed 32 kg on its own. There is also provision to add an extra bag if you would prefer to spread your allotted weight between different suitcases, however, the overall weight you have booked will remain the same. If you have a Plus or Advantage ticket, then a 20 kg allowance will automatically be included in your fare.

Transatlantic flights are a little different in that the maximum dimensions allowed (for length + height + width) cannot exceed 158 cm, but if you are an Economy Smart, Flex or Business customer you will have a 23 kg bag included in your fare. Any alternative ticket holders or baggage weighing over 23 kg will incur a charge.

What hand luggage can you take on an Aer Lingus flight?

The Aer Lingus hand luggage allowance is restricted by both weight and size. You are allowed one item of luggage plus a smaller personal item which could be a handbag, laptop or baby-changing bag. The main cabin luggage cannot be heavier than 10kg and must be smaller than 55 cm x 40 cm x 24 cm. Those dimensions include anything that may be added to the bag like wheels or handles, and you must be able to put this into the overhead lockers yourself. The smaller bag must not be larger than 25 cm x 33 cm x 20 cm and should be placed under the seat in front of you. Obviously, if you arrive at the airport with bags that are too large or there are too many to take onto the aircraft, they will be placed in the hold and you will be charged accordingly.

Aer Lingus Regional flights have slightly differing allowances and even if only part of your journey is on one of the Regional services, your whole trip will be subject to that baggage allowance. Only one item is allowed onboard in these circumstances and this must be less than 7kg and smaller than 48 cm x 33 cm x 20 cm.

All airlines in Europe are subject to the same rules regarding liquids as they are strictly controlled in cabin baggage. All liquids, and that includes creams, toothpaste, deodorant and lipstick, must be in containers of 100ml or less. These must be clearly visible in a see-through plastic bag which should be able to be sealed. Medicines and baby food can also be taken onboard, as can duty-free as long as it is with the receipt and still in the sealed security bag supplied when it was purchased.

While the flight experience and value rating was very good the pre-flight experience was a bit of a nightmare. I couldn't find a way to add an extra bag and the cost of that online. I was kept being told over the telephone that I could only add an extra bag when I arrived at the airport usually the most expensive option. I traveled from Belfast by bus and was greatly inconvenienced by not knowing even approximately how much an extra bag would cost. I don't think I would have had this problem had I booked my flight directly with the air line. I will not use a third party agent ever again.
